Trial Energy Savings Project
The University of Queensland is looking to identify, and over time, implement energy efficiency measures as part of its carbon strategy.
Undertaking energy audits is a critical first step for identifying energy savings potential and to deliver bottom-line results. Energy audits detail energy consumption, energy uses and costs, and identify energy-saving opportunities. They indicate where the greatest potential for improvements in energy efficiency exist and where effort should be directed for improvement.
UQ has commissioned a pilot energy audit project of 11 buildings on campus in 2010 to identify where energy consumption can be reduced, including cost and greenhouse gas emissions. Recommendations from the audits will be assessed and selected for implementation.
Following the energy-efficiency works in these pilot buildings, the energy program will be rolled out to the remainder of the buildings at the St Lucia campus.
Pilot buildings
Implementation of energy audits has commenced in the following 11 buildings at St Lucia and Gatton campuses. The pilot buildings have been chosen because they represent a cross-section of the wide variety of buildings and activities on campus.
The 10 buildings at St Lucia account for 20 percent of the total electricity consumption at St Lucia campus.

The UQ Centre will also be audited as part of the Trial Energy Savings Project, but will be undertaken as a separate auditing project.
Timing
The audits are scheduled to take place between April and July 2010, with site audits of each building expected to occur in June. Building occupants will be contacted and informed of on-site audits.
The audits will be project-managed by Property and Facilities Division and carried out in accordance with Australian Standard AS/NZS 3598:2000 Energy Audits.
Savings implementation
At the completion of the audits, all identified energy savings opportunities will be prioritised for implementation. Over the following months, the prioritised projects will be funded, implemented and monitored to measure the success of the energy-saving measures.
