Toward a sustainable UQ
Toward a sustainable UQ

The University of Queensland Sustainability Pledge is an initiative to inspire and motivate the UQ community to adopt more sustainable practices.  The pledge encourages UQ staff and students to make positive changes and by doing so, contribute to reducing the University's ecological footprint and to foster a greater awareness of sustainability at UQ.

Take the Pledge

I pledge to support Sustainability at UQ by committing to the following principles:
Minimise energy consumption where possible
e.g.
-          Turn off lights and equipment when not in use
-          Set equipment to Power Save mode as the default
-          Keep the fume cupboard sash closed
-          Turn off air conditioning when not required
Minimise waste
e.g.
-          Consider whether I really need to make that purchase
-          Use a refillable water bottle to avoid buying bottled water
-          Set my printer to double sided
-     Place recyclables in the appropriate recycle bin
Choose more sustainable transport
e.g.
-          Cycle, walk or take public transport to campus
-          Car pool
-          Use the intercampus bus service
-          Avoid business travel and teleconference instead
Reduce my utilisation of water
e.g.
-          Turn off the tap when not in use
-          Fill the dishwasher before turning it on
-          Run taps only as long as necessary when diluting chemicals
-          Report water leaks
Engage in "Green Purchasing" practices
e.g.
-          Take my own reusable cup when purchasing coffee or tea
-          Buy local where possible
-          Purchase Fair Trade
-          Choose energy efficient equipment
Support campus natural ecosystems and native flora and fauna
e.g.
-          Not feed or bother the native wildlife
-           Place rubbish in the bin
Minimise UQ's environmental risk
e.g.
-          Report any environmental incidents
-          Place waste in the correct bin
-          Comply with UQ sustainability processes and procedures
Support the concept of a sustainable estate at UQ
e.g.
-          New buildings with low ecological footprints
-          Campus landscapes that promote natural biodiversity systems
-          Campus infrastructure supplied by a range of renewable and low energy systems
Be an active participant of UQ's Sustainability program
e.g.
-          Be a role model to others
-          Become a Green Office Representative
-          Encourage others to Take The Pledge
-          Extend my sustainability actions at UQ to life outside campus

I pledge to make positive changes to support more sustainable living in the UQ community.
