“O Week” is a University-wide celebration for both international and domestic students who are beginning their studies at UQ. Held in the week before the start of Semesters 1 and 2, it is an excellent opportunity to meet people and make friends soon after arrival in Brisbane.
Highlights include:
> campus tours and training sessions which teach students how to find and use key campus facilities such as the Library, Student Centres, the computing network and teaching facilities
> academic sessions providing advice and information about specific programs and courses, helping students to complete various administrative requirements
> special sessions for international students on finding part-time work, safety, and the Australian health system
> entertainment activities such as Market Day, barbecues, bands, exhibitions, and sign-up stalls for UQ Sport and clubs and societies.
For International students
Orientation for international students includes Getting Started sessions and a compulsory orientation session, both of which take place before classes begin.
- Getting Started
Students attend a Getting Started session within a few days of arrival. The session includes information on enrolling and obtaining student ID cards, “O Week” activities, banking, making contact with other students, and student concessions when using public transport.
- Compulsory Orientation
The International Student Welcome is a compulsory session that provides students with an overview of services and support systems available to them during their studies, as well as information on UQ’s special resources and facilities, and their legislative obligations in regards to their student visa.
Following the official welcome, separate orientation sessions are held for full degree, and Study Abroad and Exchange students. These sessions offer more specific information and advice on issues such as enrolment, the Library, learning assistance, and living, working and travelling in Australia.
