Featured courses:

Australian Popular Culture AUST2000
You will examine the social function of popular culture in Australia with particular emphasis on the period from the 1970s to the present. The course asks how popular culture is produced and consumed and how the function of specific forms (such as popular  music, television, cinema, magazines, advertising, youth cultures, sport and leisure) contributes to concepts of individual and national identity - what it means to be Australian.
Popular culture in Australia is much more than "the bush, the beach and the backyard"! The course does not attempt to define a uniquely Australian form of popular culture, but rather it looks at the distinctive ways in which cultural activity and practice, are produced and viewed in Australia.
Students will attend several screenings of iconic Australian films as a part of the course.

Australian History: Current Issues in Historical Perspective HIST1201
This course looks back into Australia’s past, asking and answering a series of questions to explain contemporary attitudes and events.
The course structure acts as an ongoing dialogue between the present and the past. Using contemporary issues in Australia – race, immigration, culture, environment, politics and foreign policy - the course critically analyses the historical origins of Australia and what it faces in the 21st Century.
A number of lectures in this course are delivered by guest lecturers, who are experts in the field.

"I am currently studying Australian History and Contemporary Australia. The students at UQ are a mix of both domestic and international students. I enjoy participating in the classes. UQ staff are well trained and their responses to questions are quick and precise.
The University campus at St Lucia is awesome, the atmosphere is perfect for relaxing and studying.
I have learnt skills such as communication and independence. Everyone is so friendly and whenever I ask a question, I get plenty of responses. I’ve had a great time with the fine weather in Brisbane."
