"Zoology might be an unconventional route to take for a Singaporean, but the program at UQ successfully amalgamates the fascinating world of animals with their biomedical, agricultural and conservation applications to produce graduates with a dimensionless range of career and further study options. The best thing about UQ has got to be the fair advantage every student gets to participate in the wide range of activities on offer. I did a Summer Research Program where I got to work with moths and wasps (I love insects)!" Gurion Ang (Singapore)

The theoretical and technical knowledge you will gain in these courses is supported with practical training.

Featured courses

Animal Welfare, Behaviour & Handling, ANIM1014

Learn techniques to handle and manage companion, farm, recreational and wild animals to ensure the safety of humans and animals. A combination of lectures and hands-on practicals will give you a good understanding of animal behaviour and of the relationship that they develop with us.

Zoology, BIOL2204

Build your understanding of the body form and function, and life history characteristics of the major groups of animals. Covering animal diversity and evolution, from primitive metazoans to vertebrates, this course describes the fantastic diversity of animal and life histories in an evolutionary and phylogenetic context.

Precision Plant & Animal Management, AGRC3036

Utilise the power of precision technologies for addressing real life issues in agricultural land management. Learn how to analyse spatial data sets, process images, monitor and map yield and even how to fly Quadcopters. This hands-on course covers a range of precision agriculture technologies such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), and Mapping and Variable Rate Technologies (VRT).

Agroecology, AGRC2040

Study the interrelationships between plants, animals, soils and water within an economic, social and global framework. You will receive a foundation in plant and animal biology as well as ecological principles in agricultural systems, enabling you to analyse, improve or develop novel management approaches. This course includes a full-day field trip to a major farming region.

The Soil Environment, LAND2003

Our soils are a vital resource; they play a key role not only in supplying water and nutrients to plants, but as an environmental buffer. This hand-on course provides you with an introduction to soil fertility and management, including the biology, physics and chemistry of soils. Learn to classify soils based on their composition, diagnose nutrient deficiencies in plants and develop strategies to overcome environmental degradation. You will have the opportunity to apply and refine your practical skills during field trips.

Food process engineering I, FOOD2003

Food processing is an integral part of food production. In this course you will learn food engineering principles including heat transfer and heat exchangers, thermodynamics, gases and vapours, steam, psychrometry, mass and energy balances, fluids and fluid flow, basic rheology, refrigeration, instrumentation and control, and apply your practical knowledge to solving actual problems.

Food Microbiology I, MICR2001

Assuring the microbiological safety of food products is essential to avoid outbreaks of foodborne illness. Through a combination of practical sessions and lectures you will learn the main characteristics of many commonly encountered foodborne pathogens, the ways in which these pathogens contaminate and survive in foods and cause disease, Australian and international standards relating to microbiological criteria for foods, and the hands-on skills required to isolate and identify microorganisms.

Functional Foods & Nutraceuticals, FOOD3000

Consumer awareness and interest in the relationship between diet and health has increased substantially and are now major drivers in the market positioning of foods. The course covers the issues and challenges in the development, evidence testing, marketing and changing regulations controlling functional foods and nutraceuticals. It will prepare you for a role in this growing worldwide industry.
