The Science and Industry Endowment Fund (SIEF) was established in 1926 to provide support for scientific research. Since 2009, CSIRO has gifted significant funds to the SIEF to be applied to scientific research for the purposes of assisting Australian industry, furthering the interests of the Australian community or contributing to the achievement of Australia’s National Research Priorities.

As part of SIEF’s Undergraduate program, and in keeping with CSIRO’s wishes, a significant level of funding from CSIRO’s gift has been allocated towards scholarships for low-socio-economic students who are from rural or remote areas or are from Indigenous backgrounds. The aim of the scholarships is to promote the study of science and engineering among groups who face significant financial and/or social barriers to undertaking university study.
