Program Rules for the Bachelor of Engineering

BE Rules

1.     Program rules dictionary: 

1.1  "Compulsory courses" means all courses set out in the BE list for the chosen field of study.

1.2  "Electives" means the elective courses set out in the BE list for the chosen field of study.

1.3  "First aid certificate" means a senior first aid certificate granted by the St John Ambulance Association or a comparable body.

1.4  "Practice" means engineering professional practice.

1.5  "1997/1998 student" means a student who first enrolled in the program during 1997 or 1998.

1.6  "Pre-1997 student" means a student who first enrolled in the program before 1 January 1997

1.7  A “major” means #50 as set out in the BE list for the chosen field of study.

1.8  A “double major” means #60 as set out in the BE list for the chosen major field of study.

1.9  A “minor” means #10 as set out in the BE list for the chosen major field of study.

1.10 “Field of study” means the chosen discipline within the BE program.

1.11 “Common core” means #8 as defined in the BE program requirements.

 

2.     Transitional: 

2.1  A 1997/1998 student must complete —

(a)   the pass degree requirements under the rules in force on 31 December 1998; or

(b)   the honours degree requirements under these rules.

2.2  A pre-1997 student must complete the program under the rules in force on 31 December 1998.

2.3  The supplementary examination rules under GAR 1A.13 apply to pre-1997 and 1997/1998 students. 

 

3.     Field of study: 

3.1  A student must complete the program in a field of study approved by the executive dean.

3.2  A student may complete a double major or a minor in a field approved by the executive dean. 

 

4.     Program requirements: #64, comprising —

(a)  a major, or a double major, or a major and a minor; and

(b)  the balance from electives or other courses approved by the executive dean. 

 

5.     Maximum credit for previous study: #40.

6.     Special rules: 

6.1  Practice:

(a)   A student must complete 60 days of practice approved by the executive dean.

(b)   Within 4 weeks of the start of the semester following the period of practice, a student must give the executive dean a 1000–1500 word written report —

(i)     in a form approved by the executive dean; and

(ii)    containing the comments of the owner or manager of the place where the practice was undertaken.

6.2      First aid certificate: Four weeks before the proposed graduation date, a student must gain a current first aid certificate and provide a copy to the executive dean.

6.3      Award of the bachelor of science: A student who withdraws from the program after completing the requirements for a BSc may be awarded that degree.

 

7.     Honours (for students completing after August 2008):

7.1  Entry: to enrol for honours, a student must —

(a)   gain a minimum GPA of 4 in the #8 common core; or

(b)   satisfy the executive dean and head of school that the student is qualified to undertake honours.

7.2   Program requirements: A minimum of #16 and a maximum of #32 of level 3 and 4 courses comprising

(a)   all compulsory level 3 and 4 courses from the field fo study; and

(b)   level 3 and 4 electives taken from part B for the field of study.
