Why study the Master of Petroleum Engineering?

The Master of Petroleum Engineering program covers the technical disciplines associated with the development of conventional and unconventional oil and gas resources. The program combines UQ's world-class reputation in teaching and research with current industry insights to shape you and your fellow students as the next generation of highly skilled professionals that will solve future energy challenges.

This program is taught by world-class industry experts, including guest lectures from current industry representatives and mentoring opportunities with senior technical managers. The program includes a world first field development capstone project to design a plan for development of an unconventional gas resource, opportunities for research projects on real industry problems, and hands on learning experiences with advanced software tools. Classes are taught in intensive teaching blocks that allow students to combine study with employment, and there are opportunities for industry placements.

What you can do with a Master of Petroleum Engineering

Careers

Petroleum engineers work for some of the world's largest companies looking to design and develop new methods for extracting oil and gas. Australia's oil, gas and energy industry play a key role in the economy, underpinning the economic performance of the transport, mining and agriculture sectors. With continued population growth and the ever-increasing need for energy, the future economic growth of the modern industry looks definite. There are also many opportunities to work overseas.

While this degree may be accredited by an official industry accreditation body in Australia, completion of the degree may not result in graduates receiving automatic accreditation. Please contact the relevant registration body for details of any conditions for accreditation.

Program Rules and Requirements

To complete the Master of Petroleum Engineering

To complete the Master of Petroleum Engineering, a student must complete a requisite number of courses chosen from the course list and according to the Rules for the program.

Students should be aware of the University of Queensland rules, particularly the General Award Rules, which govern the conduct of UQ programs. Students will find a link to the General Award Rules, and other University rules, on the University Rules page.

To complete the program, a student must complete 24 units from the program course list.
