Why study the Master of Biotechnology?

There is currently a tremendous growth in the international biotechnology industry and allied service sector. Research and development managers require scientists with core technical skills, knowledge of commercial imperatives and current regulatory environments.

This Masters program is designed for scientists who want to update their technical and research skills in core areas such as molecular biology, protein technology or bioinformatics, and who wish to acquire more extended research laboratory research than is available through the three semester MBiotech. The program will provide a strong training for entry to a PhD.

The Master of Biotechnology Program is accredited by the US Council of Graduate Schools (Washington DC) as Professional Science Master's programs.

What you can study

This program provides comprehensive training in scientific disciplines underpinning the biotechnology industry and research through advanced lectures, projects and directed study. Students gain an introduction to research methodology; training in the special requirements for undertaking research in the biotechnology industry; and the opportunity to undertake a major biotechnology research project.

Program Rules and Requirements

To complete the Master of Biotechnology

To complete the Master of Biotechnology, a student must complete a requisite number of courses chosen from the course list and according to the Rules for the program.

Students should be aware of the University of Queensland rules, particularly the General Award Rules, which govern the conduct of UQ programs. Students will find a link to the General Award Rules, and other University rules, on the University Rules page.

A student must complete #32 in total, comprising:

  • #8 from part A;
  • #6 from part B;
  • #4 from part C;
  • #8 from part D; and
  • #6 from any combination of part C or part D.
