What you can do with a Graduate Diploma in Biostatistics

Careers

There is an on-going shortage of skilled biostatisticians in Australia and around the world. Graduates in biostatistics have substantial opportunities in the public health sector, medical research and the pharmaceutical industry. This program aims to fill the gap between programs in public health and epidemiology (which train users of biostatistical methods, not professional biostatisticians) and general statistics programs (which do not cater for the diverse and specialised needs in health research).

While this degree may be accredited by an official industry accreditation body in Australia, completion of the degree may not result in graduates receiving automatic accreditation. Please contact the relevant registration body for details of any conditions for accreditation.

Program Rules and Requirements

To complete the Graduate Diploma in Biostatistics

To complete the Graduate Diploma in Biostatistics, a student must complete a requisite number of courses chosen from the course list and according to the Rules for the program.

Students should be aware of the University of Queensland rules, particularly the General Award Rules, which govern the conduct of UQ programs. Students will find a link to the General Award Rules, and other University rules, on the University Rules page.

A student is required to obtain #16 from the GDipBiostatistics List

  1. Students with a prior undergraduate degree with majors in mathematics and/or statistics:
    • #12 from Part A comprising
      • #2 for PUBH7600
      • #10 for other courses from Part A
    • #4 from Parts A, B, or C.

  2. Students with a prior undergraduate degree in a health field:
    • #12 from Part A comprising
      • #6 from Part A for PUBH7600*, STAT7601* and STAT7614;
      • #6 for other courses from Part A
    • #4 from Parts A, B, or C .

* May be replaced with another Part A course if exemptions have been approved.

Course sequencing:

  • Almost all other courses have pre-requisites. These must be taken into account when selecting courses.
  • PUBH7600 & STAT7601 (or previous mathematical courses covering calculus and matrix algebra) are pre-requisites for most other courses.
  • Some key courses such as PUBH7600, STAT7601, STAT7603 & STAT7614 are offered every semester. Other courses are offered once annually in semester 1 or 2 only.
