Why study the Master of Economics?

The Master of Economics program is specifically designed to strengthen and extend the knowledge of students with significant economic backgrounds gained from undergraduate study. Students or working professionals seeking to specialise in economic analysis and decision-making develop a high level of economic proficiency.

Obtaining a higher qualification in economics is a career investment. Analytical ability, critical thinking and logic are highly valued commodities, and graduates of this program have the ability to succeed in a dynamic and an increasingly competitive environment. Courses develop knowledge in core economic principles and applications, while electives focus on specific areas, including international trade; environmental and natural resource management; health; public sector management; business economics; and economic modeling.

What you can study

The program offers advanced training in econometrics, and microeconomic and macroeconomic analysis. Students also undertake research sufficient to provide entry to the PhD program and will develop vital research reporting skills necessary to be effective as economists, analysts and advisors in the private and public sectors. This program also allows the exploration of other relevant fields of interest. Electives are available in areas such as environmental economics, natural resource economics, health economics and economic development.

What you can do with a Master of Economics

Careers

Graduates can expect to find work in government agencies, at the local, state and federal level. They may also find employment in the private sector, including banks, consultancy companies, utilities, international agencies, insurance companies and the finance industry.

Professional memberships

Graduates may be eligible for membership with the following professional bodies:

While this degree may be accredited by an official industry accreditation body in Australia, completion of the degree may not result in graduates receiving automatic accreditation. Please contact the relevant registration body for details of any conditions for accreditation.

To complete the Master of Economics

To complete the Master of Economics, a student must complete a requisite number of courses chosen from the course list and according to the Rules for the program.

Students should be aware of the University of Queensland rules, particularly the General Award Rules, which govern the conduct of UQ programs. Students will find a link to the General Award Rules, and other University rules, on the University Rules page.

A student is required to obtain #32 from the MEcon List comprising -

  • #24 from Part A; and
  • #8 from Part B.
If exemptions apply for Part A courses, students are to undertake electives from Part B. With Head of School approval, a student may include #2 for any level 7 course towards Part B. Refer to the MEcon rules for further information.
