Why study the Master of Music Therapy?
The program provides students with advanced knowledge in music, music therapy, and psychological theory. Graduates demonstrate advanced practical musical skills on a portable instrument; a keyboard instrument; and in singing and fluently articulating a range of musical styles. Students develop high levels of music therapy skills suitable for client groups of all ages. This program satisfies the requirements for registration as a music therapist with the Australian Music Therapy Association.

Placement courses
The Music Therapy program includes a number of placement courses in which students are assigned to a supervisor in various facilities and engage in supervised therapy sessions. The Australian Music Therapy Association requires a minimum number of hours of supervised placements before students can be eligible for registration as Music Therapists. The School's Coordinator of Clinical Training is responsible for placing students and makes every effort to map appropriately students and placements. Placements do not require relocation. The Coordinator also ensures that students conform to Australian Government requirements by obtaining blue cards. BMus other than Music Therapy, plus audition and interview; or 3 year Bachelor degree preferably in psychology or an allied health discipline; 6 units of psychology courses or equivalent plus audition and interview.
Additional application information
Auditions will comprise: Essential: Performance on primary instrument - 3 pieces of contrasting styles. Desirable: Performance on piano/guitar at a level suitable to accompany singing Desirable: Vocal performance self-accompanied on piano and/or guitar. Interstate and international applicants may send an audio or visual recording and be interviewed by telephone. Each applicant is required to submit two referee reports, together with a Master of Music Therapy application form. Applicants must also meet the prerequisite introductory psychology courses (PSYC1020, PSYC1030 and PSYC1040 or their equivalents from other universities).

To complete the Master of Music Therapy, a student must complete a requisite number of courses chosen from the course list and according to the Rules for the program.
