Compulsory Placement Course

Students must complete 10 days school experience and 90 days supervised practicum. Every effort is made to place students within a reasonable distance of their home base but they can be expected to travel up to 90 minutes due to public transport connections and incur costs associated with travel and possible lost income over this period. Students are generally placed at Ipswich, Brisbane, and southeast Queensland and are encouraged to explore the option of a rural placement. Rural scholarships are available from the School of Education to assist with travel and accommodation costs.

Students are required to have a current Blue Card (Working with Children Check) before commencing practicum. Students can apply for a Blue Card through the School of Education and should do so three months before their practicum is due to commence. The Teacher Preparation Programs Handbook provides information about practicum and school experience requirements and is available from School of Education.

The program equips students to teach in secondary schools or vocational education and training, and can also lead to employment in staff training and development programs in business and industry. Graduates are eligible for teacher registration in Queensland and qualified for employment as secondary school teachers in state and independent schools worldwide. Graduates who specialise in music or LOTE teaching may also seek employment in primary schools. An education degree opens up a vast range of career opportunities within educational settings such as Head of Department, Principal, Guidance Officer, Learning Support Teacher, Student Advisor and Education Advisor.

A student is required to obtain #64 comprising -

• #32 from Part A of the BA List including two single majors;
  and
  
• #32 from the BEd List including -
  (i) #16 for Part A; and
  (ii) #16 for Part B.
