Why study Guidance and Counselling?

This field provides the knowledge, understanding and skills that are essential for today's professional guidance counsellors. This specially designed program of study allows students to develop competencies as professional guidance counsellors for employment in schools, TAFE colleges, agencies, or as private practitioners. The program focuses on:

  • developing counselling competencies
  • understanding career development and education across the life-span
  • linking assessment practices to instructional interventions
  • understanding ethical behaviour and practices
  • developing comprehensive guidance programs
  • participating in a guidance and counselling practicum placement.
Domestic students enrolled in the MEdSt(Guidance and Counselling) may be eligible for income support and should contact Centrelink.

Employment opportunities

Guidance Counsellor within Schools, TAFE Colleges, Community Agencies, Private Practice. A Master of Educational Studies (Guidance and Counselling) or its equivalent is the minimal standard required by Education Queensland and the independent system for teachers who are seeking to be employed as school counsellors (guidance officers). This program is accredited by the Queensland Guidance and Counselling Association, the professional association for school counsellors.
