Genetics Single Major
Part of the Bachelors of Business Management/Science program
Commencing semesters, 2017
School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences
Why study Genetics?
Genetics, more than any other discipline, is transforming modern biology. Genetics is the study of inheritance: the structure and expression of genes, the genetic basis of traits, and the interaction between genes and the environment at the population and species level. The growing availability of completely sequenced genomes, computational analysis and molecular analytic tools is allowing unprecedented discoveries in areas as diverse as human medicine, agriculture, conservation biology and biotechnology.
The analysis of vast collections of genomic data has spawned the new discipline of bioinformatics that has required the development of new analytical and programming tools.
Genetics is an appropriate major to be taken on its own or in combination with any other biological major or Computer Science.

University research laboratories, research institutes, hospital medical research laboratories, state departments of agriculture and state departments of health. Similarly, quarantine departments, departments of natural resources or fisheries, university laboratories involved in terrestrial or marine ecology and species conservation are all beginning to use genetics as a central part of their studies.
Whether you are interested in discovering medically significant genes, developing diagnostics for human disease, developing more productive and disease-resistant crop plants or domestic animals, conserving endangered species of wildlife or understanding changes to populations being conserved, a genetics major will enhance your prospects of employment.
Currently, there is a shortage of geneticists with computational bioinformatics skills. Opportunities exist internationally for individuals with strong statistical and programming qualifications.
