Why study Production Animal Science?

You will study a range of sciences including animal behaviour, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, health, genetics and reproduction that underpin the effective and humane production of animals for food, fibre and pharmaceuticals. You will use the latest technologies in disease control, welfare management and food quality. You will study business principles and gain practical skills in applying these through industry placements to ensure the profitable and sustainable management of commercial, ethically compliant animal based industries.

Throughout the program you will gain practical experience with livestock facilities on campus and take part in field trips to commercial animal enterprises.

Employment opportunities

This major leads to careers in the commercial animal industries, including beef, sheep, dairy, goats, pigs or poultry, and associated allied industries.

You will find employment in diverse roles such as:

  • biosecurity, extension and animal welfare officer with government departments
  • manager and technical officer with allied industries, such as feed milling, stock equipment manufacturers and animal health companies
  • manager of animal production enterprises (beef, dairy, goats, sheep, poultry and pigs)
  • officer with the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service or Customs
  • research scientist with government departments, CSIRO and universities.
