Entry to undergraduate programs at UQ is competitive. Applicants unsuccessful in gaining entry to their preferred program may improve their selection chances by completing one full year in a less competitive undergraduate program.

Upgrading can be a complex process, especially for applicants who have previously undertaken tertiary study. Please contact UQ Admissions for specific advice.

Generally speaking, to upgrade, students must complete the equivalent of one full-time year of study at the bachelor level (or higher), which is 16 units of tertiary study at UQ.

It may be possible to gain a competitive entry rank with less than one full-time year of bachelor level (or higher) study, however, these ranks are capped and tend to be inadequate for entry to the high demand programs (such as physiotherapy). Please consult the University’s Entry options publication (PDF) for further details.

Please note the following:

  • If you cancel a course by the due date for cancellation, or are granted 'withdrawal without academic penalty' for a course, then these courses will not contribute to the total number of units studied. Credit transfer will also not contribute.

  • Schedule 2 of the Admission Rules, which is the schedule UQ uses to determine an entry ranks for one full-time year or more of bachelor (or higher level coursework) study, assigns slightly higher entry ranks to students from comprehensive, research-intensive universities including UQ (classified as Group 1 institutions). You will find a link to the Admissions Rules on the University Rules page.

  • Students from other Queensland institutions (classified as Group 2 institutions) are assigned entry ranks based on the standard QTAC schedules.

  • If a student has completed one full-time year of bachelor (or higher level coursework) study at a Group 1 Institution as their most recent study, all studies undertaken at Group 1 Institution(s) may be used to allocate the entry rank, unless a higher entry rank would result from the inclusion of all studies.
