Course description

Preparation for Paramedic Practice 3 will build on the knowledge & skills gained in the previous two Preparation for Paramedic Practice courses (PMDC1102, PMDC1202). This course is taught in the final semester of the program and will be delivered over two intensive three-week blocks separated by the final clinical placement (PMDC3203). The aim of this course is to synthesise previous learning undertaken during the Paramedic Science program to prepare the students for their role as an entry-level graduate paramedic. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the professional requirements and expectations of this role, including the importance of an ongoing commitment to evidence-based practice and research in the pre-hospital care environment. Students will also be prepared for a role as leader, mentor and supervisor - necessary attributes for ongoing professional development as a qualified Advanced Care Paramedic. Topics will include a theoretical understanding of learning principles, leadership styles, and reflective practice providing the students with the required foundational knowledge to enable the professional development of self and colleagues. Students will also be taught how to effectively manage multi-casualty incidents and will participate in interprofessional learning via a multi-service major incident scenario. This course will be delivered over seven weeks following the six week on-road clinical placement block.
