Course description

Paramedic Clinical Skills 2 will build on students knowledge and skills acquired in Paramedic Clinical Skills 1 (PMDC2100) and will continue the theory and practice of effective communication, history taking, physical examination and procedural skills. Communication skills will include topics such as breaking bad news, obtaining informed consent, managing expectations, as well as communicating with patients who are angry, upset, violent or non-communicative. These communication skills will prove useful in the concurrent course Behavioural Conditions & Emergencies (PMDC2202) where students will be required to communicate effectively not only with patients with a diagnosed mental illness, but also with those in extreme emotional distress. Students will learn how to perform a musculoskeletal and neurological physical examination and will learn history taking skills for these body systems. This will be complemented by concurrent learning in Trauma & Environmental Emergencies (PMDC2201) where both neurological and musculoskeletal examination play a crucial role in patient assessment. Procedural skills listed within the Queensland Ambulance Service Advanced Care Paramedic scope of practice including Advanced Life Support skills will also be taught as part of this course, building on information from the Preparation for Paramedic Practice courses (PMDC1102, PMDC1202). This course will be delivered in block mode to accommodate Paramedic Clinical Placement 2 (PMDC2203).
