Course description

This course examines the interaction of visual cultures (art and film) within Asia, and between Asia and the `West'. It will focus especially on East Asian countries such as China, Japan and Korea, but will also include parts of Southeast Asia. The course will emphasise the importance of understanding the past in order to more fully grasp the shared history and diversity of Asian visual cultures. It will highlight the tensions between tradition and modernity that can be seen to this day. The course will take a thematic approach and explore issues relating to a range of topics including myth and religion, gender and daily life, power and politics, and East-West cross cultural exchanges.
