Course description
ENGL1800 is grounded in canonical literary works in English from the mediaeval period to the late twentieth century. It surveys and explores high points in the English literary tradition at the same time as it helps students develop the skills and concepts required for the interpretation and critical study of literature. We have chosen texts that are pleasurable and exciting to read and discuss, and that at the same time illustrate core concepts from genre to narrative to rhetoric. In the course of the semester, you will read Beowulf, Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales', Shakespeare's 'King Lear', Swift's 'Gulliver's Travels', Joyce's "The Dead", Rhys's 'Wide Sargasso Sea', Morrison's 'Beloved', and a wide range of poetry.
