Course description

Featuring classic or canonical literary works in English from mediaeval times to the late twentieth-century, this is a foundational course for further study in English literature, past and present. Authors include the Beowulf poet, Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare, Jonathan Swift, Jane Austen, James Joyce, Jean Rhys, Toni Morrison, Salman Rushdie, and a selection of poets. Texts studied are representative of key literary traditions and periods. During the course students are introduced to critical and theoretical concepts for the study of literature.
