Course description
Ground improvement modifies the ground's existing physical or chemical properties to enable economic and safe use. The modifications are required because some places cannot sustain buildings' loading or allow the construction of excavations such as shafts or tunnels. To go around the issues, we can use methods classified into (1) strength and bearing capacity improvements; (2) minimisation of deformations; and (3) multipurpose and flow-reducing methods. This course introduces some of the most common solutions, including dynamic compaction, vibration techniques, prefabricated vertical drains, micropiles, geosynthetics, jet grouting, stone columns, soil-cement columns, grouting, and soil mixing.
