Course description

This course provides an introduction to chemistry as a molecular science. The course will provide students with core chemistry skills and knowledge recommended for studies in the biological and nutrition sciences. This course will also meet the needs of non-science majors who wish to extend their chemistry knowledge and skills beyond senior chemistry level. Core topics include kinetic theory, thermodynamics, chemical equilibrium, acid base chemistry, chemical kinetics and redox chemistry. Each facet of the content will be presented in contemporary science contexts. The course is designed for those students who require a solid basis of University first year general chemistry as a complement to other study, not necessarily in the physical sciences.

CHEM1021 does not lead to second year courses in chemistry or biochemistry (apart from CHEM2052 and BIOC2000). Students that may want to continue in chemistry, should consider doing CHEM1020.
