Course description

CHEM1010 is being offered for the last time in Semester 1, 2014. This course is offered for students who have already successfully completed CHEM1020, and require CHEM1010 as a compulsory course.

CHEM1010 and CHEM1020 were required in combination under the program rules for 2013 and earlier, but have been replaced by the combination of CHEM1100 and CHEM1200. Please contact the Faculty of Science if you are unsure of your selection.

The course provides an introduction to Chemistry as a molecular science. The way in which atoms interact with one another to form bonds is used to develop an understanding of the structure and reactions of organic molecules. Core topics include: Quantum numbers, orbitals, & electron configurations, chemical bonds, shapes of molecules, hybrid orbitals, functional groups, stereochemistry of organic molecules, organic reactions and carbonyl chemistry. Transition metal compounds are introduced through the topics of crystal field theory, metalloproteins and metals in medicine.
