Course description

Students must apply to the School for enrolment in this course.

This course is a residential field school teaching practical archaeology skills through participation in an authentic research setting, including survey, excavation, and public liasion. The field school is followed by a period of laboratory or desktop research which contributes to students' technical reports. Students will learn how field research is structured and implemented in archaeological research and cultural heritage management.

2011 Field School will take place in Karonga, Malawi, attached to the Malawi Earlier-Middle Stone Age Project, which is currently investigating deposits dating to between 280 ¿ 30 thousand years old. Fieldwork will occur during the between-semester break in the first two weeks of July 2011. Seminar-format meetings and assessment will occur during Semester 2. Field locations will vary each year.

The African field school is currently limited to 10 students. Prerequisites are ARCA1000 and ARCA/ARCS1001. Students must have a minimum GPA of 5, and be enrolled in the extended archaeology major.

In 2011 students must cover their own transport to Lilongwe, Malawi, as well as a maintenance fee (around $850) that includes food, in-country transport, and accommodation. Exact details of cost, dates, and locality particulars will be available by early 2011.

An application process will commence in early 2011, in which interested students submit an application statement to the School of Social Science outlining the reason for their enrolment in this course (ie skills acquisition, career paths). Applications will be assessed by the course coordinator. If more than 10 students express interest, applications will be considered based on GPA and the strength of the application statement.
