Course description

The Romans developed their culture and transformed their world by making things. This course will explore what we can learn about the Romans from the things they made and left behind: their art, architecture, urban planning and archaeology. It will focus on the imperial capital Rome and the town of Pompeii, where the eruption of Vesuvius buried and preserved detailed evidence of Roman art and archaeology. We will consider how our understanding of Roman art and archaeology (including painting, sculpture, coinage, ceramics/glass, temples, baths, villas and the innovations in arches and concrete that allowed soaring domes and aqueducts) has changed right up to the most recent advances and debates. This course may not run if there are fewer than 20 enrolments.
