Program description

The Bachelor of Arts degree offers over 2000 courses in the core disciplines of humanities and social sciences. BA students can choose from more than 50 majors tailoring the degree to suit their own particular career aspirations. The BA is also available in dual degree format with a wide range of other UQ degrees.

Program objectives

The Bachelor of Arts program aims to provide graduates with strongly developed skills in the key performance areas of written communication, problem solving, critical thinking and interpersonal understanding.

Dual degree programs for the Bachelor of Arts

Honours

The honours program requires an additional year of study. Honours programs are offered in all discipline areas. The objective of the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) is to produce graduates who will be able to think clearly, flexibly and critically, and be able to weigh up evidence and arguments and make rational choices. Graduates should be able to express themselves effectively, both orally and in writing; be able to work cooperatively in a team; and be able to demonstrate a depth of understanding in one or more fields of knowledge. The Honours Program also prepares students for further study at the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) level.

Study options

EXCHANGE PROGRAM: Because of the flexible nature of the BA degree program, BA students are ideally placed to participate in the University of Queensland's student exchange program. The program offers students the opportunity to study at a wide range of overseas universities for a semester or a year.

INTERNSHIPS: Interships aimed at providing students with an inisight into the workforce are available to BA students in a number of areas, including Journalism, Political Science, Media Studies. Entry is based on academic performance and availability of placements.

Careers

Graduates of the BA find employment in a wide range of fields, with future directions dependent on the chosen area of study. Some specialised areas of study lead in specific directions, such as Psychology, Journalism or Archaeology. Other areas of study such as History, Communications, Political Science, Economics, and Geographical Sciences, provide the basis for careers within Australia and overseas, in government, business, media, and humanitarian fields, for example - Policy Officers, Economic Development Managers, Television Research Analysts, and Humanitarian Field Officers. The ability to undertake a variety of courses in a diverse range of areas provides the opportunity for broad intellectual and practical skills development.

Information for current students

To complete a program :

To complete follow the rules to Bachelor of Arts, a student must complete a requisite number of courses chosen from the Program list and according to the Rules for the program. Links to these are listed below. Students should also be aware of other University of Queensland rules, particularly the General Award Rules, which govern the conduct of UQ programs. Students will find a link to the General Award Rules, and other University rules, on the University Rules page

A student is required to obtain #48, comprising:
  • #32 from Part A of the BA List including -
    two single majors or one double major; and
    at least #20 at advanced level
  • No more than #6 may be included for courses in which the student has received a grade of 3.

Students are also requested to note the following policies:

  • A course can only count towards ONE major.
  • A student must include at least #8 from Part A of the BA List in the first #16 of enrolment.
  • A student in the Bachelor of Arts may not enrol on a cross-institutional basis prior to the completion of #16 in the program.
