PhD Stages

Well into it - end of first year
By the end of the first year ideally you have a better grasp of your topic and a good feel for the literature. Probably you have mastered some necessary research skills (laboratory techniques, computer skills, statistical methods, library skills) and become aware of others that you need. You could be heading off for some field work. However you may be starting to feel the pressure and have some doubts about being able to complete the work in time. Maybe your supervisor is urging you to publish or, on the other hand, maybe your supervisor seems to be unaware that time is passing. Around about now, you may feel overwhelmed by the amount of research in your area and wonder if you'll ever find your own niche, or be able to make that 'original contribution'.
