People to meet, places to see and things to do. Join Mates@UQ!
Get involved, uni isn't all about study!
Mates@UQ is open to all UQ students and aims build a stronger UQ community. It is free to get involved and we organise fortnightly updates on what’s happening around the UQ community in places like clubs, societies, UQ Sport, campus events and other great things happening around the city.
Mates also run our own events, programs and activities which are all aimed to help you meet new people, have fun and relieve the stress of everyday uni life. We run on and off campus events nearly every week of the semester for anywhere between 20 and 250 people. We always try to have a broad range of events so there is always something for everyone and if you like free food and fun you’ll be kicking yourself you’re not already involved in mates.
We also specialise in free sub-programs which help to generate a tighter UQ community. Every semester hundreds of students get involved in our sub-programs to help them gain leadership skills, group facilitation experience, professional recognition, cultural diversity, international language practice and to simply meet a wide range of new and interesting people.
Chat Mates will give recognised training to native level English students and enable them to gain leadership and group facilitation experience (great for your CV) while they guide ESL (English as a Second Language) students through weekly conversation groups. ESL students can join to improve their English fluency and confidence while they build genuine face to face communication skills. For both groups, it is also a great way to meet people from all over the world with a variety of exciting cultures and backgrounds!
The Language Exchange Program is a matching service that we run every semester to help students who are interested in learning, sustaining or developing second languages. Participants are matched in pairs or small groups to help one another to improve their target languages. This program is great for students who are interested in learning more about a particular language and culture.
Aussie Family Mates is a program that has been designed to help international students reach out to the greater Brisbane community and experience the Aussie culture and lifestyle. We recruit local Aussie families who are interested in learning more about different cultures and are eager to take international students into their home, on trips and to events around the city. This provides a genuine, unaltered experience for our international students.
