Expected by you

  • Regular meetings with your supervisor(s) / advisor(s)
  • Guidance in formulating and focussing a topic (This is one of the hardest things for a novice researcher to get right. It is very easy to be too vague or too ambitious.)
  • Timely feedback on writing (content and discourse)
  • Opportunities to gain needed skills

Expected of you

  • Diligent, safe and ethical work practices
  • Increased independence. As you progress through your candidature, it is expected that you will need less and less guidance and feedback. (But like an apprentice, expect that you might need quite a bit of guidance in the early stages.)
