In August 2009 University of Queensland Careers and Graduate Employment held their first ever Volunteer Expo. 44 non-profit, charities and non-government organisations attended on the day with 1,800 students attending. Volunteer opportunities ranged from Festivals and Expos through to Children's Hospital Programs and Charity Fundraisers.

Abbey Medieval Festival
Our Abbey Medieval Festival is an internationally acclaimed event. It is the largest in the southern hemisphere.Our volunteers are mostly employed on the gates selling tickets, wrist-banding, recording postcodes for tourism and grant application documentation. We have volunteers carrying out surveys again for the local tourist industry. We have volunteers looking after medieval re-enactors and stallholders. We have tavern personnel. Volunteers who look after our VIP clients. Hygiene personnel, cleaning toilets and emptying bins. Spruikers, Information personnel, Museum shop assistants and looking after the personnel in the ‘Great Hall". Our range is quite extensive.

Each day hungry children, elderly people and the vulnerable are fed, listened to and provided for by the Red Cross in our communities. Conservation Volunteers Australia
Conservation Volunteers is a national, not-for-profit, community based organisation that is dedicated to involving the community in practical natural resource management programs. Volunteering is one of ten targets in the Queensland Government's Toward Q2: Tomorrow's Queensland. This Q2 2020 target area under the Fair Queensland ambition aims to increase the proportion of Queenslanders involved in their communities as volunteers by 50%. Girl Guides Queensland
Girl Guides Queensland is a not for profit organisation whose mission is to enable girls and young women to grow into confident, self-respecting, responsible community members. Greenslopes Private Hospital Volunteer Services
Greenslopes Private Hospital Volunteering Services have many innovative and exciting programs for you to choose from. Our volunteers come from many backgrounds and walks of life, from students to retirees and we recognise and value every volunteers unique ability. Our volunteers visit and provide companionship to patients, escort patients to Discharge Lounge and other areas of the Hospital. They also assist with deliveries of items within the hospital.We have a number of volunteers who are students studying in the medical field who find volunteering in a hospital environment a great experience. We also have a number of international volunteers who find volunteering at the hospital assists with practicing their English skills. Heart Foundation (Qld Division)
The Heart Foundation's mission is to prevent early death and disability from heart disease and stroke in Australia. This single purpose drives all that we do.It recognises that caring for people with cardiovascular disease and taking a population approach to the prevention of cardiovascular disease strongly enhances our effectiveness to achieve our mission.
The Heart Foundation's objectives relate to achieving our mission by working in an integrated manner across the cardiovascular continuum. That is to:
Foster research that will provide a greater understanding of cardiovascular disease, its treatment and prevention
Provide leadership regarding clinical best practice, and
Undertake best practice health promotion initiatives.
The Heart Foundation can offer volunteer opportunities in any of the Business/Finance, Education, Public Health, Human Movement, PR and Communications faculties.
Project Volunteering: reflects short term volunteer engagement, often by volunteers with specific skills, with clearly delineated outcomes and timeframe. This is an option particularly suited to professionals and students.
Public Health/Human Movement Volunteering: volunteers undertake project work within the cardiovascular health area working with staff with set specific goals and time frames.
Formal Volunteering: takes place in traditional structured settings. Volunteers have clear ongoing roles with clear lines of accountability and responsibility. Volunteers are usually part of the service delivery team, within a managed environment.
General Volunteering: at the Heart Foundation office helping out with basic general administration: data entry, mail outs, filing and photocopying etc.
Event Volunteering: usually takes place initially at the Heart Foundation helping to set up for the event and then at the event venue and can cover a variety of tasks designed to help the event run smoothly.
Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland
The Leukaemia Foundation is the only not-for-profit organisation in Australia dedicated to supporting people with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders.Free services provided to patients and families include counselling, accommodation and transportation. The Foundation also invests more than $1 million each year to fund cutting edge medical research to find better treatments and cures.
The Foundation relies on the generosity of individuals and businesses to continue its work and expand its services.

Volunteers are an integral part of Mater Health Services, enabling our hospitals to maintain a wide range of services to support the needs of patients, visitors and staff. Innovation in service type and professionalism in service delivery, are paramount to Mater Volunteer Services.Mater Volunteer Services operate a centralised Volunteer service across six Mater hospitals in South Brisbane and provide direct and indirect support to patients, visitors and staff.
Our volunteers
Mater volunteers work across 50 different roles in approximately 100 different departments and come from a very diverse range of backgrounds. Oaktree Foundation
The Oaktree Foundation is an aid and development organisation run entirely by volunteers under 26.We're doing something real about poverty.
Oaktree was founded in 2003 and is now established in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia.
At Oaktree we raise awareness in the community by running programs and events, we lobby the government and we fundraise for our overseas projects.
We have partnered with developing communities in 6 countries to provide over 40,000 young people with increased educational opportunities. We believe that education is the most powerful force we have to change the world.
Princess Alexandra Hospital Volunteer Services Unit
The Volunteer Services Unit at Princess Alexandra Hospital provides services to staff, patients and carers hospital wide. Our large multi cultural unit has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Our team of 100 volunteers range from 20 years of age upwards, we are students friendly, and where possible will try to schedule our services to meet your uni timetable. We can offer volunteers a range of experiences depending upon their area of interest.In recognition of the service our volunteers provide we give them lunch vouchers, uniforms, free car parking, training, support and a look at life from a different angle.
Queensland Association for Healthy Communities QAHC
The Queensland Association for Healthy Communities (QAHC, pronounced ‘quack') originally formed in 1984 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic (then know as Queensland AIDS council). QAHC continues to fight the spread of HIV, other STIs and Hepatitis C in Queensland's gay and indigenous communities and this work is funded by Queensland Health.QAHC also promotes the health and wellbeing of all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Queenslanders and builds the capacity of the community. Through the use of our resource centre and facilities, QAHC provides support to 55 LGBT community groups across the state. All LGBT community work is unfunded and relies on donations, bequests, volunteers, grants and sponsorship.

QUEENSLAND HOMICIDE VICTIMS’ SUPPORT GROUP provides help and support for the immediate and long-term survival of families, witnesses and close friends in the aftermath of murder.It is our mission to provide confidential peer support, help, love and understanding to victims of homicide and to create awareness of the needs of homicide victims, whilst promoting education and reform.
Qbuild - Roma Street Parkland
Roma Street Parkland hosts a number of community events and festivals each year. The events range from school holiday programs through to major festivals such as Queensland Multicultural Festival.Event Management and Education students may be interested in volunteering in the Parkland by:
Providing information and assistance during events to visitors of the Parkland;
Assisting the Event Coordinator with activities related to the Parkland's School Holiday program and other events conducted by the Parkland;
Contributing to the debrief evaluation of the Parkland's annual calendar of events including its school holiday program and;
Undertaking general administrative duties or special projects/duties as required.
The Salvation Army Salvos Store
Salvos Stores utilises secondhand donations to sell through a network of retail outlets. All of the money raised from these sales is put into the work of The Salvation Army which in turn benefits our community. We are always looking for a broad range of volunteers specifically with merchandising, marketing, retail and business skills.Radio Lollipop
Radio Lollipop provides care, comfort, play and entertainment to children in the Mater Hospital. We are looking for energetic, enthusiastic and creative people who want to make a difference to a child's stay in hospital. Our volunteers commit to 2-3 hours per week and require a Blue Card.Starlight Children's Foundation
The Starlight Children's Foundation relies on the generosity of individuals, corporations and community groups to ensure that starlight can bring ;ove, laughter and support to seriously ill children and their families across Australia. Starlight programs include Wishgranting, Captain Starlight, Starlight Express Rooms in seven major paediatric hospitals nationwide, Starlight Escapes for families, and Starlight Fun Centres which give sick kids access to games and movies from their hospital beds. Starlight also holds events and functions to raise much-needed funds as we receive no government funding for our programs.We have a wide range of people of all ages, backgrounds and professions who volunteer for Starlight and help us brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families.

Wild Mob
Wild Mob is a not-for-profit, non-political organisation providing volunteers the opportunity to work on important environmental projects in remote, iconic destinations.
We are looking for students from any faculty who would like to attend our Great Barrier Reef camp and help with marine conservation during their uni holidays. While volunteers are required to pay for the camps, prices are based on cost-recovery to keep them as affordable as possible for students.
Woodford Folk festival, Queensland Folk Federation
The Woodford Folk Festival is an event of international standing. Held over six days and six nights it presents more than 2000 performers and 400 events with concerts, dances, workshops, forums, street theatre, writers' panels, film festival, comedy sessions, acoustic jams, social dialogue and debate, an entire children's festival, art and craft workshops, late night cabarets and special events including a spectacular fire event. Yeronga State High School is a small multicultural school with students from 60 cultures. Volunteers will work with motivated young people from Africa, Iraq, Iran, Asia or Afganistan to name a few. Many are refugees from war-torn countries and have hug gaps in their education. Therefore we have a high need for helpers. You will work one-to one or with a few students.Volunteers need a current Blue Card and we can help you apply for one, once you are accepted as a volunteer.
