Restate information in your own words:

It is much easier to learn information when it is in your own words, so always try to write information in your language. As you do so, summarise it to key words and phrases that capture the meaning of the text.

You will know if you have learned something successfully if you can:

  • do it by yourself, confidently
  • understand what you are doing
  • apply what you have learned in a ‘new' situation
  • teach someone else how to do it

So teach yourself or a friend (in your own words)

  • Explain as though you had to teach someone else (talk to yourself - aloud or under your breath).
  • Use pictures/diagrams to help explain
  • Work through examples to show how the principles work
  • Use examples, stories and analogies
