Marketing yourself to your employer of choice

Only 75% of jobs are advertised and as the saying goes “it’s not what you know but who you know”. At UQ Careers and Graduate Employment we believe it’s what you know plus who you know so if your are already working on the degree, its time to get networking! Marketing yourself to an employer can be an effective way of gaining work experience to a full time position. This is why it works:

  • Not all positions are advertised
  • It is costly to recruit and train a new member of staff ($20,000 to recruit and train a new staff member, $6,000 advertising costs, $ 4,000 – $10,000 placement fees to recruiters)
  • You will have narrowed down your competition
  • It shows a high level of motivation
  • Cost and time for employer
