Industry research

Want to increase your chances of gaining the job you want?

The key is industry research.

Join an industry or student association – This can be a great way to increase your networks before you enter the field and rub shoulders with potential employers.

Subscribe to an industry magazine – Key yourself up-to-date with the latest industry news and this can help at both uni and in your job search. Many students are asked at interview stage about their awareness of their specific industry and it’s a response you just can’t fake, so get reading!

Informational interviewing – This is a chance to phone or meet someone in your field and ask them a few questions about what they do, how they got their big break and what would be there key piece of advice for a graduate. People are really willing to give you the time so why don’ you give it a go.

Work experience - Ever wondered what a day in the life of a (insert your chosen career) is like? Think no more, turn it into action. Talk to someone in the profession you want to break into and see if you can arrange some work experience to find out if its for you. Don’t forget to have a chat to a Careers Advisor or your faculty about insurance. You can be covered for free through the University of Queensland if it is directly related to your degree but you have to fill in some paperwork first.

For further information book a Career Planning Consultation (15min action planning session) with a Careers Advisor to talk through your strategies by phoning 3365 1704.
