How to write selection criteria

The best indicator of future performance is past performance, so a selection criteria demonstrates your skills and abilities in detail against each of the criteria for the job. Here is your ‘to do’ list for developing a selection criteria:

  • Start early; approach your SC like an assignment
  • Request an Information Pack if necessary
  • Analyse the Position Description
  • Find out as much as you can about the organisation
  • Can you answer these questions:
    • Can I supply examples for each criterion?
    • Do I really, really want this job?
    • If the answer is yes, you are ready to start

Many employers expect the selection criteria should be addressed with a particular method, the STAR method. You can use the STAR model to help you plot your experience. For each selection criteria incorporate you skills and experience using the method below:

  • Situation (Set the scene)
  • Task
  • Action (Provide the most information)
  • Result (It must be a successful result)

It’s not easy to answer the criteria using the STAR method, it takes time and patience and a bit of assistance. Book into the How to Write a Selection Criteria workshop by searching in the events tab of Careerhub.

If you already have developed your selection criteria and would like to have it reviewed by a Careers Advisor, book into our Job Hunting Survival Kit (small group workshop) which is run 3 times a week (more sessions are available in the Graduate Recruitment period). Book your place by searching on the events tab in Careerhub.
