Like academic writing, resume writing can take a while to pick up. Take a look back to the resume you had while you were at school and it gives you a pretty good indication of how, you and your resume evolve over time. At UQ Careers and Graduate Employment Services we have gathered together some first aid tips for the resume:
Speak to person recruiting for the position and introduce yourself before submitting your resume
Target your resume to the position you are applying for
Make sure your resume is no more than 3 pages
Remember most employers only take 20 seconds to review your resume so put the most important information first e.g. skills summary
Leave out any personal information – age, marital status, etc
Use bullet points and succinct sentences
Use consistent fonts, formatting, dates, and titles
References aren’t included
Use action words and key words
Always use appropriate spelling and grammar
Always highlight accomplishments
Check you have a professional email address
Check your mobile phone message, does it sounds professional?
