Assessment centres

Assessment Centres (AC’s) are designed to measure you against the aptitudes required for the job. Your specific technical skills (if necessary) will be assessed, through exercises prepared to test your ability to solve problems, present ideas and work with other people. This is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your abilities in a practical way.

Employers will shortlist initially from the match of your resume / cover letter to the key job duties and some recruiters will then conduct a telephone pre-screen prior to inviting you in for an Assessment.

If you don’t have a chance to attend the How to Shine at an Assessment Centre workshop find some top tips for the day below:

  • Show your enthusiasm
  • Assume you are being assessed at all times
  • Take the opportunity to talk to senior staff and graduate trainees
  • Ask questions, join in discussions - don't sit in a corner on your own
  • Don't hog the conversation - show interest in the other candidates
  • Do not eat or drink too much
  • Listen carefully to instructions and ask if you are not clear about what
    you have to do
  • Make sure you are aware of the time constraints in any exercise and
produce what was asked for in that time
  • Don't panic if you feel you have made a mess of an exercise - it is your
overall performance  and role in the exercises they are interested in. Nobody is perfect
