 Temporary Residence Visas

It is a requirement of your employment with the University that you obtain and comply with the conditions of an appropriate Temporary Residence Visa for the period of your employment.

Consistent with the temporary entry regulations of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC), the University will nominate you for Long Stay Temporary Business Visa, Subclass 457. The process involved with both the nomination and visa application is outlined below:

  1. Employer (University) Sponsorship
The first step is for the University to sponsor you for temporary residence.

The Human Resource Officer whose contact details are on the front page of your Letter of Offer/Contract will be the person with whom you will need to liaise about your visa requirements.

In order for the University to Sponsor you for Temporary Residency we will need the following information about you and any dependants** that will be covered by your visa application:

    • Full name as it appears on the passport
    • Date of birth
    • Current address
    • Current contact phone numbers (business hours and after hours)
    • Country of birth
    • Country of citizenship
    **Definition of Dependants

Please be aware that it can take up to six weeks for an employer nomination to be assessed and that the University cannot guarantee that approval will be given.

The Human Resource Officer will forward you the nomination approval via email as soon as it is received. You should wait to apply for your visa until after the nomination from the University has been approved by DIAC, however you can commence an application online by using the Nomination Application Transaction Reference Number (TRN) provided to the University by DIAC.

You must submit the employer nomination approval with your application for temporary residency once received.

You have 12 months from the date of nomination approval by DIAC to lodge your visa application.

  2. Preparing your visa application
You may now make application for your visa.  The easiest way to lodge an application for your visa is via the DIAC website. Paper forms can still be lodged but will not benefit from the faster processing associated with electronic lodgement.

A fee will be payable at the time you submit your application. Your application will not be valid unless accompanied by the fee. The University is not responsible for the cost of your visa application. For fee details please view the DIAC fees and charges page.

It can take some time to process your visa application and there is no guarantee that your application will be successful.

Do not book flights or arrange for removal of your belongings until your visa application has been approved.

The Human Resource Officer Office contact on your letter of offer is available to you for advice. Although the University must abide by the DIAC regulations in force at any time, we will do all that we can to ensure the smooth and timely processing of your Temporary Residence Visa.
