Project Title: 'Gross Nitrogen Balance of Effluent Irrigated Agroforestry by Gelita at Beaudesert'.

Project Outline:

This study focuses upon the method of effluent disposal by the Gelita plant located at Beaudesert. The effluent produced contains high levels of nitrogen, in addition to high concentrations of sodium, calcium and sulfate and currently is irrigated onto grazing land surrounding the plant. A principal challenge facing the effluent disposal is the use of a sufficiently high irrigation rate to leach the applied salt, and more importantly ensure that nitrogen does not leach from the soil profile. The environmental impact is a concern, and subsequent further investigations were warranted. The outcome of this study will serve as a model for determining whether irrigating high strength (nitrogen rich) industrial effluent for agroforestry purposes is sustainable.
