Project Title: Factors affecting plant root growth in highly saline and alkaline bauxite residue

Course: PhD

Country of Origin: Australia

Supervisors: Assoc. Prof. Neal Menzies, Assoc. Prof. Bing So, Dr. David Mulligan

Project Outline: This research aims to investigate the chemical factors limiting plant root growth on highly saline and alkaline bauxite residue at the Alcan Gove bauxite refinery in Gove, NT Australia. Current research includes: 1) The direct effect of high pH on root growth, 2) The effect of high Na and high Mg concentrations on Ca uptake, 3) Nutrient availability and pH changes in the rhizosphere, and 4) Root distribution patterns as effected by various soil capping techniques.
