Gunnar has extensive research experience in the areas of soil management and landscape processes in tropical and temperate regions, with a strong interest in sustainable systems. His background ranges from soil structural management of the soils in the NSW western district,  management of clay soils in south-east Asian rice based systems, and research into adoptable management options for soils in the guinea savannas of West Africa.

His present main research interests are soil water relationships, spatial and temporal variability of soil properties from ped to landscape scales, dryland salinity management, soil amelioration, environmental impact of long term use of conservation tillage technologies and 'soil health'.
