Course outline:

Day 1

MODULE 1 Introduction to carbon, climate change & markets

  • Introduction and brief discussion of carbon, the latest climate change science, and the forecast impacts, threats and opportunities.

MODULE 2Climate change legislation & emissions trading theory

  • Explore public policy options to manage greenhouse gas emissions, and the theory of ‘cap and trade’ emissions trading schemes.

  • Review of international climate change policy and mandatory emissions trading schemes such as the EU ETS, NZ ETS. Outline of the proposed schemes in Japan, Canada and the USA.

  • Detailed examination of the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007(NGERS) and the draft legislation (or latest edition) of the proposed Australian Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS).

Day 2

MODULE 3Carbon Management

  • Outline of a seven-point strategy for managing carbon.

  • A look at international emissions offset / permit opportunities such as CDM, JI and REDD.

  • Consideration of energy efficiency – Reduce costs and reduce carbon!

  • Delegates participate in 2 practical exercises, which are designed to help organisations manage their compliance obligations under the CPRS. This includes:

o    A practical exercise demonstrating how organisations can estimate their carbon footprint and seek assurance in accordance with methods stipulated under NGERS.

o    Why and how organisations can develop marginal abatement cost curves (MACCs).

§  Detailed industry case study on compliance.

Day 3

MODULE 4Beyond compliance

§  Voluntary carbon markets, such as the carbon offset market in Australia (Greenhouse Friendly, National Carbon Offset Standard) are discussed.

§  The course then focuses role of renewable energy (including a review of the importance of the Extended Renewable Energy Target), RECs and GreenPower, and cleaner forms of production in organisational-level emissions management.

§  Participants will break into teams for a practical exercise/simulation on how organisations engage in auctions and secondary markets for permit trading (including a brief review of financial instruments likely to be available e.g. CERs and AEUs).

§  Following the emissions trading exercise, conduct a debriefing session. A summary of the course / final Q&A / next steps session will then serve to conclude the course.

§  Participants will develop a action plan to take back to the workplace, discuss and implement.

§  A networking drinks / canapés session on conclusion.
