This is an exciting time to be interested in journalism and communication. The media, technology, people’s habits, and communication practices and occupations are all undergoing change. The ways in which we learn and make discoveries about and engage with journalism and communication are having to change, too. What we make of these dynamic times is a joint project among all of us.

The School’s approach to the opportunities and challenges of the present and the future is based on critical reflection; applying in-depth knowledge to enhance understanding; social and ethical awareness; innovation, enterprise and creativity; openness to other fields and disciplines; a global orientation; independence and teamwork. Above all, leadership in communication – written, oral and visual.

Learning itself equates to change. It should also be fun. We try to make it both.

I am especially pleased to welcome you, therefore, to the School of Journalism and Communication at The University of Queensland as a partner in our exploration of the exhilarating possibilities of today’s journalism and communication environment – as a student, a practitioner, a researcher, a scholar or an interested citizen.
