Background:

Shuang Liu had worked in universities in China, the USA and Hong Kong before joining UQ in 2000. Having lived and worked in different cultures, she has a profound interest in how culture influences people’s thinking, doing and being. Shuang has a track record of publications in the area of cross-cultural adaptation of immigrants and intercultural relations in multicultural societies (using both qualitative and quantitative research methods). Her research advances understanding of the dynamic nature of cultural identity and identification, particularly of people who live away from their heritage culture or who live in a multicultural environment.

Shuang Liu teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, in the area of identity, culture and communication and research methods. She has a track record of supervising PhD students and currently she is the supervisor of four PhD students. Shuang serves as a board member of International Academy of Intercultural Research, an association for intercultural researchers across the world. She also serves on the Editorial Board of International Journal of Intercultural Relations, a leading journal in intercultural research, first launched in 1977.

  • MA in Linguistics (Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, China, 1986)
  • BA in English Language and Literature (Heilongjiang University, China, 1982)

  • Cross-cultural adaptation and identity negotiation
  • Media portrayal of minority groups and media effect on intergroup relations
