As part of the School's commitment to delivering timely and effective Journalism education, students are encouraged (and sometimes required) to produce journalistic, communicative or reflective pieces across the various media streams, including sound, vision, print and imaging. This often requires students to acquire and develop new skills in equipment, software, and production process, skills highly sought after by employers.

In order to make these challenging skills accessible, the School offers the services of the Media and Production Support (MaPS) Team.

The MaPS Team offer optional, free courses, at various levels, in the following:

  • Audio Recording
  • Video Production
  • Digital Photography
  • Audition 3 (sound editing)
  • Premier Pro CS3 (video editing)
  • InDesign CS3 (print & layout)
  • Photoshop CS3 (image editing)

The schedule for upcoming sessions, which are run throughout the teaching year, can be found on the Signup Site. The sessions are generally posted 2 to 4 weeks in advance, and thin out near the end of the semester as exams approach.

During these sessions, all software, computers and equipment are supplied. Students may, however borrow equipment from JACtech  to hone their skills. JACtech's Online Booking System provides an effective and efficient way to book and borrow the wide range of equipment on offer.

The MaPS Team are also on hand for:

  • ad hoc assistance from our base in the Ideas Centre (Level 2, Joyce Ackroyd Building)
  • email and discussion-forum based support and assistance for external or off-site students & faculty
  • advice on equipment and software purchase
  • "in-tutorial" support for Courses utilising embedded MaPS support

Combined with our Online Learning Tutorials and working closely with the IT Team, the MaPS team offers a wide range of support and extensive resources to Students tackling both traditional and new media projects.
