Research within the School of Journalism and Communication focuses around two main areas - Communication for Social Change (CSC) and Citizen Journalism.

The Centre for Communication and Social Change (CfCSC) is the School's research centre, is the leading research centre in the CSC field. The CfCSCspecialises in the study, research and practical application of communication processes in sustainable development; communication for social change (CSC). Communication for social change is an emerging frontier, the goal of which is to use communication processes, techniques and media to facilitate social, economic and technological development.

The CfCSC has a global network of experts and researchers working in a range of CSC related fields, an intensive grounded research culture and a strong commitment to fostering PhD candidates.

The Centre offers its PhD candidates unparalleled access to world-class advisors, links to experts in the field and opportunities for transdisciplinary collaboration.

It has successfully secured scholarships and funding for numerous PhD candidates, and sees this assistance in securing financial support as part of its mandate.  Furthermore, the Centre’s PhD candidates are supported through writing retreats, conference support, and scholarship top- ups.

The School is also committed to re-designing the theory and practice of journalism in the context of the challenges facing journalism in the 21st century. Citizen Journalism is an expression of this change and research currently being carried out in this area includes a mapping out of global forms of citizen journalism and the theorisation of citizen journalism. The SJC has organised conferences on citizen journalism and staff are represented at all the major global events on citizen journalism.
