Research within the School of Journalism and Communication focuses around two main areas - Communication for Social Change and Citizen Journalism.

The Centre for Communication and Social Change attached to the School has become a focal point for research in areas such as Information Communication Technologies and Development, culture, communications and social change, participatory communication, alternative and community media and development support communication. The Centre supports a number of Research Higher Degree students, a number of media consultancies and is currently involved in preparing for the UN's World Press Freedom Day that will be held at UQ, in May 2010.

The School is also committed to re-designing the theory and practice of journalism in the context of the challenges facing journalism in the 21st century. Citizen Journalism is an expression of this change and research currently being carried out in this area includes a mapping out of global forms of citizen journalism and the theorisation of citizen journalism. The SJC has organised conferences on citizen journalism and staff are represented at all the major global events on citizen journalism.

Staff research interests also includes politics and the media, youth media markets, religion and the media, refugees, migrants and the media, environmental journalism, talk radio, conversational analysis, inter-cultural communication.
