Background:
Dr Cokley worked as a reporter and feature writer, subeditor, trainer and website developer at News Corporation in Brisbane, Australia, between 1985 and 2002, after working for The Daily Sun newspaper and the Australian Associated Press wire service (1984-1985). He continues to maintain a level of professional practice in the private sector and is a member of the Society of Editors (Queensland), the Australasian Research Management Society and the Journalism Education Association (Australia). He began teaching journalism at universities after graduating with a bachelor's degree in business (communication) from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in 1990 as well as continuing to write for engineering, retail and indigenous magazines, books and newspapers. He was the first Journalist-in-Residence at Griffith University (2002), lectured in journalism at James Cook University, Townsville (2003-2004) and started lecturing and researching full-time at the University of Queensland in 2005. He leads an international research team investigating the media characteristics of the first communities in outer space.

Research Grants:
Since 2005, I have devised and led, or been an active team member on, eight successful internal or external competitive and non-competitive grants, contracts or projects. Funds obtained by those projects have totalled $221,721 [one external competitive grant collaborating with University of South Australia colleagues (2011), one non-competitive project with another UniSA colleague (2010), one ALTC grant (2009), three international external consultancy contracts (2007-2010), and two internal UQ grants]. Most recently, I was successful in initiating and then obtaining a collaborative grant as part of a UniSA team (January 2011 through to January 2012) to research and develop a 3D eResearch scenario building and testing environment, and new pedagogies for teaching and learning using dynamic visualisation methodologies.
