Passive observations of human subjects in a public arena, or research involving accessing public documents, do not require ethical approval.

However, if your research fieldwork involves contact with human subjects, for example through interviews or questionnaires, you will need to apply for ethical clearance. This applies to both RHD and coursework students.

This is done by filling and submitting a fairly simple form, along with attaching documents that you will be giving your subjects (i.e., Informed Consent Form and Research Information Sheet). You can access a copy of the form Here online:

Ethical Clearance is given through the School’s Research Committee. For more information, contact the chair of the committee, Associate Professor Eric Louw (e.louw@uq.edu.au), the deputy chair, Dr Levi Obijiofor (l.obijiofor.uq.edu.au), or see Section 4 of the HUPP.
