School of Psychology honours distinguished alumni

The School of Psychology has honoured three of their distinguished alumni in an awards ceremony that is set to become an annual event.
Professor Kevin McConkey, Professor Phyllis Tharenou, and Roger Dooley were each presented with a University of Queensland (UQ) Psychology Distinguished Alumni Award in recognition of their contributions to the field of psychology.
Each recipient has had significant achievements in areas such as practice, research, teaching, or community service since graduating from UQ.
Professor Tharenou was celebrated for her work in research and administration. She is currently the Executive Dean with the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences at Flinders University, South Australia, and is a past recipient of awards from the Australian Psychological Society and the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management. Professor Tharenou has published widely in the area of women in management, and has held senior positions at the Australian Research Council (ARC) and the ARC College of Experts.
Roger Dooley was recognised for psychology practice and teaching. With a private practice in Brisbane and long term involvement with the UQ Psychology Clinic at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, Mr Dooley is the model of a clinical psychologist. Mr Dooley is a strong supporter of the Clinical program at UQ and supervises clinical Masters students. He is a Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society and a member of the Queensland Government’s Psychologists Panel of Assessors and the Mental Health Review Tribunal.
Professor McConkey is currently Professor of Psychology and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Global Relations) at The University of Newcastle. UQ’s School of Psychology honoured Professor McConkey for his significant work in research, which is reflected in the many competitive grants he has been awarded and his numerous published materials, which includes seven books, 25 book chapters and 100 journal articles. Professor McConkey is an honorary fellow and past president of the Australian Psychological Society, and Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia, the Association for Psychological Science, and the American Psychological Association.
The event formed part of the UQ Psychology Open Day, which showcased the past successes and future pathways for the School of Psychology. Alumni were invited to attend presentations on the School’s cutting-edge research by professors Kim Halford, in clinical psychology, Virginia Slaughter, in developmental psychology, Jolanda Jetten, in social psychology, and Jason Mattingly, in neuroscience.The day also included discussions of the School’s achievements and strategic direction, interactive sessions with RHD students honoured for their cutting edge research, and a talk by Professor Phil Long on emerging technologies in the field.
